Heinrich Mann: Der Untertan (Man Of Straw/The Patrioteer/The Loyal Subject)
Set in the Deutsches Reich in the early 20th century, this novel is The story of industrialist Diederich Hessling. He is the epitome of the 'good citizen' as it was understood in those times: a man who obeys orders, bows to authorities and humiliates those he has authority over, who will accept any atrocity if it is committed by the state, who supports war out of jingoism, and who slavishly admires the Kaiser.

ALfred Döblin: Berlin AlexanderplaTz (1929)
I read this novel in school, but even that didn't spoil its fascination for me. set in the 1920s, it is The Story of worker Franz Biberkopf, who Tries to start a new life after he has been released from prison. The first German Novel using the 'stream of consciousness' technique, it is full of crime and bad sex, feverish, frightening and sarcastic.

Hans Fallada: Jeder stirbt fuer sich allein/Alone in Berlin (1947)
This story is based on real events: it is the story of a couple that tried to strengthen resistance against the Nazis by leaving postcards with anti-Nazi messages in public places. They were executed in 1943. A heart-breaking story that is thought to be the first novel about resistance by a German writer who did not emigrate.

Sven Regener: Herr Lehmann/Berlin BlueS (2001)
The description of some weeks in the life of 29-year-old Frank Lehmann, a 'slacker' who lives in West Berlin in 1989. Very deadpan, sarcastic and funny observations and drunk philosophical debates.
